A paper published in Psychological Science in the Public Interest has evaluated ten techniques for improving learning, ranging from mnemonics to highlighting and came to some surprising conclusions.

  1. Elaborative Interrogation (Rating = moderate)
  2. Self Explanation (Rating = moderate) 
  3. Summarisation (Rating = low)
  4. Highlighting and underlining (Rating = low)
  5. The keyword mnemonic (Rating = low)
  6. Imagery for Text Learning (Rating = low)
  7. Rereading (Rating = low)
  8. Practice Testing (Rating = High)
  9. Distributed Practice (Rating = High)
  10. Interleaved Practice (Rating = Moderate)
